Balancing Enrolment in Chilliwack School District
The District has a draft plan to balance enrolment and capacity in our schools. We also have a new elementary school with seats for 500 K-5 students under construction in Rosedale. To manage enrolment and plan for the new school, we are asking for feedback from students, families, staff, and community.
Public Consultation
It's important that we hear from staff, students, parents, partners and the broader community. The consultation period runs from January 28 to April 10, 2026. Please see Key Dates to learn more about upcoming engagement opportunities.
The District is working closely with those school communities directly impacted by the proposed solutions to balance enrolment. From January 2025 to early January 2026, staff had preliminary discussions with directly impacted schools. The District held 37 meetings with nearly 600 staff, students, families, and Board partners.
This What We Heard Report is a record of what we heard from school communities in early discussions.

Thank you for your question. There are currently 13 portables at Sardis Secondary and 11 will be moved this summer as construction wraps up on the addition.

Thank you for your question. The Board of Education will make a decision on the recommendations by June 2026. Any approved recommendations will be implemented for September 2027.
Share Can you evaluate choice program interest to plan for it? Can the District plan a second Early French Immersion program on the South side? Can the district plan for higher performing/attended choice programs, example: Cheam Elementary 217% capacity vs Imagine High 59% capacity. Yes, shift catchment and move programs to balance, but can you reprioritize the higher interest programs for the future? on FacebookShare Can you evaluate choice program interest to plan for it? Thanks for your questions.
The District is responsive to community demand. For example, we're adding another division of French Immersion at Chilliwack Middle next year to accommodate the number of registrations we received.
When comparing the capacity of Cheam Elementary and Imagine High, it's important to remember that the schools have different functional capacities. Cheam Elementary's functional capacity is 120. Imagine High's functional capacity is 600.
Approximately 759 K-12 students are enrolled in District French Immersion. Approximately 550 Grade 6-12 students are enrolled in the Integrated Arts and Technology program. We're seeing strong support from students, staff, and families for these choice programs.
Share How do you plan to deal with accessibility to transportation and before and after school programs for the French Immersion students?
EFI students were already impossible to get care for sure to the lack of facilities that provided transportation to Cheam. Moving it to Rosedale makes the EFI program even more inaccessible to working parents than before. on FacebookShare How do you plan to deal with accessibility to transportation and before and after school programs for the French Immersion students?
